Natural Anxiety Treatment

While feeling anxious at times is quite normal, when it takes over your life and start to affect your daily activities, it may be time to seek help. These feelings of restlessness, irritability and impatience can often be soothed with the aid of a natural anxiety treatment.

Often there will be changes in a persons physical health as well. They will have an increase in headaches, muscular tension, jaw pain, sleep problems and consequently fatigue. Neither of the two studies was statistically significant.

Some side effects of the passionflower are nausea, vomiting, rapid heartbeat and drowsiness.

There were no studies involving pregnant women or people with compromising health problems.

  • Massage therapy, shiatsu and other forms of massage are used to ease muscle tension, improve sleep and relieve stress.
  • Mind and body breathing exercises, yoga, tai chi, meditation, biofeedback, physical exercise and self-hypnosis have often been used to relieve anxiety. It may be necessary to find which will fit into your normal routine and does not add stress by interfering with your schedule.
  • Valerian. Although valerian has been used for helping with insomnia, it can also be used for mild anxiety. There is minimal research on the benefits of valerian in the treatment of anxiety. When compared with Valium and a placebo there was no significant difference between the groups. Valerian is taken an hour before bed time. It usually takes several weeks for it to work and should not be used longer than three months. Side effects include indigestion, palpitations, dizziness and headache. It should not be taken with medications that depress the central nervous system such as antihistamines and sedatives. Other precautions are for use with liver disease, alcohol or around the surgical procedures are performed. It is advisable to consult with a health practitioner before taking valerian.

  • Kava, which is native to Polynesia seems to have positive effects on anxiety. However, severe liver disease has been noted in many cases and it went as far as liver transplants in several other countries.
  • GABA, is an amino acid. Some drugs for anxiety affect GABA receptors. It is not known if oral GABA will reach the brain with the same result.
  • Aroma Therapy – the use of essential oils in massage oil or baths are used for relief of anxiety and tension. Oils such as bergamot, geranium, jasmine, cypress, lavender, rose, melissa, neroli, sandalwood, and ylang-ylang have been tested. Lavender is the most common aroma therapy for relaxation.
  • Chamomile tea, calcium, magnesium, B vitamins and pantothenic acid have also been shown to have some effectiveness in the natural anxiety treatment.
